Consumables for HF welding

Willems Industriële Producties B.V. has a variety of consumables (also known as barriers or isolators) in stock for the optimum HF welding process.

The function of barriers or isolators:

A barrier is often used between the two plastic products to be welded and the lower electrode or work table to:

  • prevent heat “leaking” to the lower electrode or work table (thermal insulation);
  • reduce the risk of a flash or short circuit (electrical insulation, the “levelling” of the HF energy);
  • prevent adhesions between the material and the lower electrode or work table;
  • obtain smoother transitions of weld seams.

Examples of common barriers or isolators:

  • Teflon coated glass fiber or tape: thermal and electrical insulator. Strong glass fiber with PTFE (Teflon) coating. Does not heat up. Does not stick. Available in various thicknesses (0.15-0.25 – 0.35 mm), with or without 1 self-adhesive layer.

  • Melinex: Thermal and electrical insulator. Does not heat up. Sticks to welding material. Fairly hard, stiff foil, very suitable for use in welding-cutting electrodes: the cutting line can only penetrate the lower electrode or work table with difficulty, therefore reducing the chance of a flash. Thickness 0.15 – 0-25 – 0.35 mm.

  • Para-rubber: Thermal and electrical insulator. Does not heat up. Does not stick. Resilient. Thickness usually 1 mm. Very suitable for use with electrodes that are not flat or 3D behind surfaces.

  • Silicone sheet: Thermal and electrical insulator. Does not heat up. Does not stick. Resilient. Very suitable for use with electrodes that are not flat or 3D behind surfaces. Available in various thicknesses 0.5 – 1 – 2 mm.  Reduces thickness differences in welded material (“soft-electrode”, smoother transitions of welded seams).

  • Elephantide (so-called elephant skin): Thermal electrical insulator. Does not heat up. Sticks to the welding material.

  • TPU sheet: Thermal and electrical insulator. Heats up in the HF-field, by which difficult to weld materials still can be welded.

The choice of barriers or isolators:

The choice of barriers or isolators takes place mainly on the basis of material properties, personal experience and preference.
